Harambee is Swahili for “all pull together”. We would like you to join us, pulling together, to help the street children of Kenya. Thousands of children live on the streets for many reasons including being orphaned by aids or other illnesses or they have to fend for themselves because there is only one parent who is unable to care for them; or there is not enough food at home to go round. Street children have no identity and are regularly beaten.
Harambee for Kenya started in 2007 after the founders had been helping Kenya Scouts to look after street children. They found that unfortunately the children would go to scouts, change into their uniform for the meeting and then afterwards return to wearing their rags and go back on the streets. The founders felt convicted to set up a safe house to help the street children and were asked to concentrate on boys as they were harder to house with families.
The first project started in Kisii, 5½ hours west of the capital Nairobi and the latest home is about the same distance but North East of the capital. In total at the moment we have about 80 children, all boys, in our care all of who are destitute and a number are orphaned. All the children are now settled and in school and doing well. We have had a number of older boys who have already left the house and who we helped to find homes and work and are all doing well.
